Lying with Light

Careful cropping is one way that photographers can lie. There are a few good examples I have seen, but here is one I came up with.

The photo below depicts an oil rig in the Arctic (specifically, the Beaufort Sea, north of Alaska).

Looks pleasant, doesn’t it? Sunny day. Light waves. Clear skies.

Below is the ‘original’ version of the image (which itself is cropped).

Sends a completely different message, doesn’t it?
