Google Translate perhaps considering new languages

I have previously identified some languages that I thought Google Translate was working on supporting. Google offers a dictionary feature on the left-hand side that, when you use it, offers to translate results into a selection of different languages.  (See right-hand side of image.)

Interestingly, some of these languages are not currently in Google Translate’s list of options, including:

  • Burmese
  • Malayalam
  • Chinese (Taiwan), and
  • Yoruba

I’ve previously identified Malayalam as a language Google Translate might be working on, but the other three were news to me.

UPDATE: Google Translate started offering Yoruba in December 2013.

UPDATE: Google Translate started offering Burmese and Malayalam in December 2014.
