Google ‘Not Preserving Search Bar’ Test?

I just noticed this new behavior this evening. Apparently, Google is doing a test where they do not preserve the contents of the search bar when you click a listing, then return to Google.

For example: I did a search for “belgian waffle maker” and got these results:

Notice that my search query “belgian waffle waker” is in the search bar at the top of the page. I clicked on the first result: Amazon.com’s listing for the Waring Pro WMK300.

I then clicked the back button and returned to Google’s results page. However, now the query is absent from the search bar:

However, scrolling down to the bottom of the page, the query is still located in the search bar at the end:

The most-likely effect I can think of that this change might have is that it could prompt additional queries, and therefore more ad impressions.

Leave a comment to let me know if you’ve seen this before, or are seeing it now or not.
