Search by Voice
Google’s voice recognition for its 1-800-GOOG-411 service is so good that it’s got me thinking, Why not run an entire search service this way?
According to Wikipedia, by the end of 2009, there were about 4.6 billion cell phone subscriptions worldwide (which probably means that more than 4.6 billion people have cell phone access, since several people can share a single phone). So, at least 2/3rds of the people in the world have cell phone access.
The number of people with Internet access is estimated to be about 1.8 billion, or about 25% of the world population.
A UN report suggests that in India more people have access to mobile phones than toilets.
Imagine the effect it will have when people are able to dial a phone number and do a search by voice, rather than by computer. Basically, the number of people with the ability to get information from the internet will triple.
