iTunes Can’t Beat Free
Apple announced today that they’ll be shutting down Lala, the streaming-music site they bought a few months ago. I think the intention here is to drive Lala users over to iTunes.
Here’s an idea that might help Google compete with Apple: Allow YouTube users to stream the audio track from a video, without the moving images.
There are tons of videos on YouTube of bands performing live or in the studio. If I could listen only to the sound, it would be similar to what Lala and iTunes offer, but for free to the users and much cheaper for YouTube to deliver than streaming the video.
I can already get video streamed without audio (by muting the sound), so why not the other way around?
